With the economy and world events in a tumult, who has time to think of kids party themes? When you have more kids than you have days in a week – which will soon be our case – then you know you’ve got some planning to do for the next party. Otherwise, they all start looking the same:

  1. lame duck decorations
  2. cake from a box
  3. icing from a can
  4. gifts from the clearance section
  5. clean up

As if that wasn’t enough, but the decorations don’t match and you’re scrambling to find something – anything – to keep the nigh-anarchists entertained, the guests are confused and you look like you’ve just been wrung out. What can a busy parent do? These kids party themes should help you to come out on top.

Kids Party Themes

1. Favorite Fictional Character

2. American Idol

3. Favorite Decade

4. Costume Party

5. Arcade

6. Outdoor Games

7. Disney

Let’s look at each one a bit:

1. Favorite Fictional Character – This is pretty wide-open to interpretation. You can use a comic book character or superhero team for a theme and have the guests all show up dressed in their costumed character role, or do a Jane Austen type of theme where everyone gets dressed for the part. Fictional characters can be book or series-specific, such as a Harry Potter theme party. They can also be genre-specific, such as “Action Hero” or the like.

2. American Idol – This party theme is fun since you can have a panel of judges that judge the karaoke talent of the party guests. Have prizes or not, and you can even record short sessions for later viewing, such as a loser defending their latent “talent.”

3. Favorite Decade – Pick a decade you know your child loves, such as the 30′s or 50′s, and make everyone dress the part, hair and all. Play movies and music from the era, and set the tables and rooms to match the feel.

4. Costume Party – This is more of a masquerade ball idea, simply have the guests show up in costume and enjoy!

5. Arcade – If you don’t have one, then rent a flat screen HDTV for the day – or get two! Have a tournament of the favorite video game according to the guests and the guest of honor. Or you can arrange for an entire night of just all-out video and arcade-style games to be rented and available at the venue, and just play.

6. Outdoor Games – Use this idea when your weather is nice enough to accommodate, and set up various games such as croquet and Corn Hole, for instance. Set up a bunch or just have a few at the ready. Great when you don’t want to clean up!

7. Disney – This is a great theme for fans of Disney. Set up a movie-specific venue, dressing the place like the set of the movie. Or have a menu that compliments a certain Disney motif, and eat in style. Having the guests, again, show up in costume to play the part is always fun.

These are some ideas you can use or just get your brain thinking outside of the normal kids party themes.
