If you love to get together with friends and family during the holidays you may be looking for some traditions that you can start. Every year is another year that everyone is older, and sometimes those who were with you last year may not be there with you this year. So in order to make every holiday different you need to create holiday traditions using recipes for your family. Here are some ways that you can do that.

If your family gathers around the table for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner have everyone make a dish that was their favorite when they were a child to bring. Have them write the recipe down on a recipe card so you can exchange recipes. Everyone must think of at least one dish that they loved when they were little and they don’t mind sharing. The next time you go to the store you need to pick up an empty recipe box that you can put the new recipes in so you can keep them.

If you get together for birthday then have everyone bring their favorite dessert dish along with a recipe of what they made to share with everyone. This is the perfect way to get a wide variety of desserts for the party and it doesn’t cost you anything but a little bit of time calling around. You will end up celebrating someone’s birthday with some great tasting treats.

If you get together with your friends on occasion you may want to hold a cookie exchange. Everyone will make their favorite cookies and bring the recipe to share with everyone. Take turns holding your cookie exchange in everyone’s home and enjoy the great taste of different cookies. If you have extra cookies left over you may want to bag them up and share them with a neighbor down the street or someone you know would love to be a part of your cookie exchange and invite them to your next meeting.

If you have boxes of recipes for your family and you want to make holiday gifts this year instead of buying something then make a recipe scrapbook of recipes that you remember your grandmother fixing when you came over as a little girl or a cake that your mom would decorate red, white, and blue during Independence Day celebrations. Once you have glued the recipes on the pages look for pictures that you may have of everyone eating the food that was prepared using that recipe and glue it onto the scrapbook as well. Decorate the outside of your scrap book with kitchen wallpaper or other decor. You will have a gift that is a keepsake as well as valuable.

3rd Child… is a Baby Shower TACKY?

My husband and I have our 3rd child on the way… I want to have a little get together (not for gifts) butto take pictures and make a cake like we did for the other 2… just so this little one can see we were excited about his/her arrival… but we DO need things. Not a lot… but we have no newborn clothes left were we passed them on to family members and charities… and if we have a little girl we have nothing. we also need new baby gates and a bouncer seat. I justdon’t want to come across in a bad light for having one… I mean we already have expensive things like CRIB, HIGHCHAIR and SWING.
thank you everyone… this at least makes me feel better about wanting a pre-birth day party. :) And for me it is MUCH more about the pictures and our son or daughter knowing they were anciously awaited than the gifts. :)

O I just love that idea… thank you.

I don’t think it is tacky. I think every baby born should have a right to get gifts given to them or for them. You know, depending on how much you would need the stuff or money that a Baby Shower would bring, you could always tell guests that in honor of you next child you want to have a party with donations to a charitable organization rather than gifts. Just an idea.
