The final touches of doing a helium balloon arch is in creating the spiral effect.  In this Part 4 of 4 lesson, I will show you how to create the coveted balloon color swirl of your arch.

Doing A Spiral Weave Arch

The key to doing a spiral weave is to follow your helix color formula.  A helix color formula is the number and pattern of colors which must be followed as each helix or section is put in place.  More balloons per helix will allow more colors per helix, that is, a 5-balloon helix will allow you up to five different colors if you need to use that many and a 6-balloon helix will allow you up to 6 different colors.  A 5-balloon helix is the standard for most balloon arches.

A Sample Helix Color Formula:  (2 pinks, 2 whites and 1 Red)

Let us assume that we are decorating for a Valentine’s Day wedding.  The client says that she wants to use the colors red, pink and white.  A very elegant helix color formula could be 2 pinks, 2 whites and 1 red balloon.  The 2 pink balloons are side-by-side.  The 2 white balloons are next to each other, and then we finally have the red balloon.

Be Sure You Maintain The Color Order of Your Chosen Helix Color Formula

The secret behind doing the spiral is to be sure you maintain your decided-upon color order.  When you place each section or helix onto your outstretched twine, you will visually follow the clockwise movement (to the right) of any one balloon.  The idea is to notice where the red balloon, which we will call the lead balloon for this example, is positioned in the first helix.

These are the steps and the sequence:

  • As you slide the second helix into place, position the lead balloon of the second helix to the immediate right of the lead balloon of the first helix.
  • The lead balloon of the third helix is placed to the immediate right of the lead balloon of the second helix.
  • The lead balloon of the fourth helix is placed to the immediate right of the lead balloon of the third helix.
  • The lead balloon of the fifth helix is placed to the immediate right of the lead balloon of the fourth helix.
  • With the fifth helix, your colors will have made its first of several complete spirals around your weave.

You continue placing all of your helixes in this same manner until you have completed your desired balloon weave length.  If you were doing a weave of 50 helixes with 5 balloons per helix, you would have a total of 10 continuous color swirls or spirals.

To quickly and easily create the spiral pattern as you are placing one helix on top of another is to always follow the movement of any one balloon of your helix color formula.
