Most of us might be feeling relieved that kids are back to school and we get a bit more time to get back to our lives. What many of us forget in the process is the fact that certain habits are cultivated in the last few months – which need to be unlearned – so that our kids can come back to routine of school life. Preferably, you should start some of the tips I have given below a few days before the school starts – but now is not too late.

Sleep on time to wake up on time:
Get into the routine of sleeping on time. It is ok during vacation to extend the sleeping time at night by 1-2 hours as it is not important to wake up on time the next day. But once the school has started – sleeping on time is utmost important as a growing child needs 8 hours of sleep daily and lack of proper sleep can result in lack of concentration and poor grasping at school.

Importance of breakfast:
Ensure that you give good and healthy breakfast to your child every morning. While it was ok for them to eat a packet of crisps or burger like brunch – avoid skipping breakfast when they go to school. A bowl of muesli and milk, with a fruit, poached/scrambled eggs (less fat) with toast and juice is ideal breakfast. Avoid high fat breakfast like hash brownies, bacon and sausages on daily basis. Right amount of sleep and proper breakfast will alert your child’s mind before they go to school and would improve concentration and retention.

Hygiene:
Never allow your child to miss their shower and go to school without being cleaned properly. It is very normal for parents to let the child go to school without shower – either because they have got up late or it is too cold. A quick shower is important to wake up the child and they would look fresh when they go to school. Feeling alert and looking fresh is important as they would feel more energetic at school and would develop more self confidence.

Take out time daily to connect with your child:
Try and have at least two hours in the evening, where you can sit with your child discuss how their day went, their friends and homework they need to get done. During this time you can help them do their homework and once that is done can spend the rest of the time talking with them, reading books or magazines or answering their questions. Ensure that this time is not spent in front of the television. This is your time with your child; so use this to help them grow; progress and learn new things.

Stop late nights for your teens during the week:
For those of you who have older kids, with loads of friends – stop weekday partying. If you have not done before, sit with them and make rules on timelines to get home, having dinner with family and partying with friends only on weekends. It is important to make them understand the advantages of following the rules and don’t just make the rules and throw it at them. Most of the time you will face significant resistance and you will have to strike a proper reasoning with them so that they understand and respect your point of view and just do not grudgingly accept the rules. Finally, it you have not done it till date – don’t make all rules at once. Slowly and steadily steer your teen towards your line of thinking and take baby steps to help them get there.

Unique Baby Shower games?

I along with my sisters/mother/mother-to-be’s mother are throwing a Baby Shower Sunday for my brother and his fiance. The problem is I need another game. I want something unique and fun. Ages range from kids to grandparents. I already have baby bingo, baby item scramble, price is right (guess the price of items like car seat and crib), and poopy diaper game (the one with candy bars). I need one more. Please help.

Thanks in advance for answers.

at my baby shower we did the you cant say baby game which someone has already explained, the guess the items in the basket which someone has already explained except send the basket around first then make them play other games so they forget and come back to that one last or you could totally trick them and they are memorizing everything in the basket then send the mother to be out of the room and they have to say exactly what she was wearing like jewlery and all that, we also put skittles in a bottle and they had to guess how many was in it when they came in and at the end of the shower we told them winner and gave them a prize who ever is closest wins and people will be really far off because it doesnt look like there is as many as there really is most people guessed about 100 and there was 220 in the bottle, the best game is the rice game u get a bowl of rice and put little safety pins in it blind fold whoever is playing and they have to dig in to find safety pins for 30 seconds its alot harder than it sounds
