Baby Shower Questions Daddy

My wife was outraged when I came home from an out-of-town trip. She’d been harassed by someone who knew her name and phone number and had received seventeen unwanted phone calls over the weekend. She was not so much afraid as she was angry that a stranger could intrude into her privacy like that.
“The guy called in the middle of the night. He called in the morning. There were messages in the voice mailbox when I came home from work”, she told me. Ultimately, with the help of the phone company, we were able to locate the caller. He is a fairly well-respected businessman and–this shocked me–a leader in his local church. He got a visit from the local police department (my brother is a cop) and we never heard from him again. In fact, he moved out of town not too long after that.
That was several years ago, before the advent of internet-based reverse phone lookup services. Now it’s a simple matter of logging in to a website, entering the offending phone number, and getting the name and address of the owner of that phone number. Some services include a fair amount of personal information, to make locating them easy. I’ve been subscribing to a reverse phone lookup service ever since they became available.
What I learned from this experience is that there are nasty, warped people in the world. That might sound very Pollyannaish. All you have to do is turn on the radio and TV to find out that there are creepy people in the world. I guess what I realized is that because I’m a “nice person”, I believed nothing bad could happen to me or my wife. I now believe it’s important to take a more proactive approach to protecting your family from unwanted callers. I wrote this article to provide a few ideas on how to avoid being targeted by “bad guys”.
Be very careful about who you give your information to. This might sound very simple, but when you think of it, we share our personal data with strangers almost every day–the people who take your credit card at the restaurant, the rep who takes your order over the phone, the data you share over the Internet. It’s all visible and it leaves “traces”.
Consider giving a made-up phone number or address to merchants or clerks who don’t really need it. While there are plenty of legitimate reasons a merchant might want your data, most of the time you’re not OBLIGED to give it to them. You can simply say “I don’t give that information out. If you have to have it, I’ll do business elsewhere”, or use a “pretend” address.
Also, make sure your private data–especially your Social Security Number–is not printed on your checks or other official papers, unless required by law. Burglars and identity thieves are very crafty people. They’re willing and able to collect a little bit of information at a time so they can amass a “portfolio” of information on you. For that reason, it’s a good idea to change your computer and bank card passwords every six to twelve months.
I use a program called “RoboForm” (www.roboform.com) to generate very strong passwords for all the sites I visit on a regular basis. Before I started using it, all my passwords and user names were the same. If a hacker had gotten into my computer, he’d have had access to every simple site and all my financial data in the blink of an eye. Now, they’re all military-grade passwords and I don’t have to remember any of them! If you get unwanted calls from unidentified callers, don’t worry about it. It’s likely that they’re coming from a person who has the wrong number (or no manners). Many telemarketers use computers to dial random telephone numbers. If someone answers, they hang up. If the call goes to voice mail, their message gets recorded.
I’ve had many late night calls from fax machine, too. Somehow, I got on someone’s fax list and I got a fax machine waking me up two or three times a night. (I couldn’t simply turn the phone off because of my work.) Again, this was before the advent of reverse phone lookup services. I’ve been using a reverse phone lookup service for several years now because I’ve been pleased with the results their database provider uses.
(Be aware of the fact that there are hundreds of web sites that advertise “free reverse phone lookups”. None of them provide comprehensive results. The best you’ll get is the same information you’ll get from directory assistance. For full details, you’ll have to pay for a dedicated, professional service.)
Make sure you teach your children how to answer questions on the phone. If a stranger calls, they can easily get information from a young innocent. If they’re not well-trained, they can answer questions like “When does your Daddy go to work?” or “Are you home alone right now?” I even heard of a six year old who was so lulled into a sense of security by friendly voice that he was persuaded to “go into Mommy’s purse and find her wallet–now read me the numbers on one of those plastic credit cards, darlin’…” I think it’s important to be aware that the worse the economy gets, the higher unemployment goes, the more important it is that you have a cautious, proactive mindset. Hungry people are desperate people and desperate people will take what belongs to you without any qualms.
In all likelihood, you’re a fine, upstanding person. You work for a living and follow the rules. You treat other people with integrity and honesty. It’s an unfortunate reality that not everyone is like you. You have to protect yourself and your family by being aware of the many ways “personal info leak” can happen.
There are many good resources for doing reverse phone lookups. I promote http://www.IdentifyTheCaller.com because they have the largest database of phone numbers, they provide full details, and they offer a 100% money-back guarantee.
