In this article, I will be giving you 10 Tips on How To Select A Daycare. After my second daughter was born, we had to find a Daycare to put our children in, so I could return to work as an Ophthalmic Technician. It was heart wrenching to leave my 6-week old and 19-month old daughters in a daycare.

  • Appearance of the Daycare Setting. Is the place fairly neat and organized? During the day, when all the children are there, it can get pretty messy at times, but it should me cleaned up when you arrive in the mornings and later in the day, when everyone is going home. Find out what they do to sanitize everything, especially toys and tables. When do they sanitize? Everything should be “wiped down” at the end of each day.
  • Licensing. Every caregiver whether it is in a private home, church, or school should be licensed and registered by the State. It should be displayed in full view for all to see. If it is hard to get this information, a “red flag” should go off in your mind.
  • Philosophy. Ask about their approach to child care issues, such as discipline and if it is similar to yours. For instance, you would not want any child “yelled at” or “spanked” if you only believe in “time-outs” or the “1,2,3 method”.
  • Background Information. Ask for background information on all the caregivers that are employed there. An excellent daycare provider usually will have a solid education and experience background. If they hesitate, or it is difficult to get this information–you should think about looking somewhere else. All information should be available and easily accessible.
  • Observe the Daycare. Take the time to go to the Daycare and watch their routine. Note how the caregiver(s) interact with a child–do they seem at ease, or are they tense and angry? Also look at the children–are they happy for the most part, and having fun?
  • References. Ask to speak to some of the other parents either by phone, or in person when you are there. I have found that other parents are pretty truthful because, after all, their child goes there too.
  • Meals. Find out what they supply as far as meals and snacks. Do you have to bring your own or do they supply the food? The Daycare I used supplied milk, juice and snacks and I had to pack the lunch. Ask about medicines. Who takes care of that and where do they store the medications. Are they out of reach to the children?
  • Child/Adult Ratio. The child to adult ratio changes according to age group, so you should find out what that is for your state. For an infant, it is usually a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio. If the child/adult ratio is not maintained, another “red flag” should go off.
  • Emergency Plan. The daycare should have a written plan for reporting and managing any incident that may threaten the health, safety or welfare of the children or staff. The staff should have training and First Aid Kits should be available and maintained.
  • First Aid. All staff should be trained in pediatric first aid, including CPR and emergency situations and injuries.

One day, our area was in a Tornado watch. I was at work 25 minutes away and of course very worried because my baby and toddler were at the daycare and not with me. I left work to go directly to the daycare to pick them up, and to my relief–all the daycare children and staff were huddled in the Nursery (which was in the middle of the building) and they were happily singing songs. I was so relieved and I knew my children were in good care. I found out later that a Tornado had touched down nearby.

10 Tips On How To Select A Daycare, are to give you the important information you need to be informed and to make the right decisions. Your children are precious and it is your responsibility to keep them healthy, happy and safe.

does anybody have a good restaurant recommend for a Baby Shower Luncheon in the CA Bay Area?

preferably in the east bay (walnut creek, livermore, danville, dublin, pleasanton), that has a separate room or area for privacy? moderately priced, american or italian food.

Buca DiBeppo (Italian food that’s very cozy and perfect for large gatherings).
