House sitting is an arrangement between two people, a homeowner and a responsible individual, a house sitter. This is a trend that is growing in popularity around the world and as a consequence the demand for reliable house sitters is growing accordingly.

Homeowners may need to leave their residences for any number of reasons: a family emergency, an extended business trip, or simply for a holiday. Many homeowners feel uneasy about leaving their homes unattended. They worry about being robbed or leaving their pets in a boarding kennel. It’s hard to really enjoy your holiday or concentrate on your work when there’s that nagging anxiety playing in the back of your mind. To help alleviate this stress, more and more homeowners are calling upon the services of a professional house sitter. The sitter agrees to occupy the home while the owner is away and in exchange for free accommodation, the sitter takes on the responsibility of caring for the premises and any pets during the owner’s absence.

The duties that the sitter is expected to carry out would have been discussed and agreed to by both parties prior to the sitter moving in. These usually include but are not limited to lawn mowing, tending the garden and any indoor plants. Bringing the mail and ensuring any important correspondence is forwarded to the owner and pet care. Pet care is especially important as many owners consider their pets family members. They expect their little friends to be fed, walked regularly, played with and be take to the vet if need be.

House sitting doesn’t just save the homeowner money since he doesn’t have to hire gardeners or pay for boarding kennels. It provides him with peace of mind. With a house sitter on-site, the homeowner knows his house is less likely to become a target for burglars. He knows that he won’t have to face hours of work turning his backyard jungle back into a garden again. He knows that although his pets are missing him, at least they are not being further stressed by being alone in a strange environment.

The advantages of house sitting aren’t just for the homeowner. House sitters benefit as well. Many see house sitting as an economical way to travel and experience the world in a way most tourists don’t. They don’t have to worry about the cost of hotels and check-out times since they are staying in a real home at no cost. Sitters are not tied to a fixed itinerary and can visit tourist meccas and other points of interest at their leisure. They can truly experience the culture of the region because they will be living it on a daily basis. They can make some really good friends too.

Others view house sitting as an excellent opportunity to research a particular area they are thinking of relocating to. By taking a house sitting assignment in that region, they can see first hand what kinds of facilities are provided and get acquainted with potential neighbours.

Still others view house sitting a way to save up for a place of their own. Full-time professionals can do long or short-term house sits with minimal disruption to their daily routine. They just go home to a different house every now and then. The money they save on rent can be put aside for a deposit on a place of their own.

House sitters are wanted worldwide and they come in all shapes and sizes. Students, retirees, professionals, couples and, sometimes, even whole families can get house sitting assignments. As long as you can stand up to a background check and have a sense of adventure you could have what it takes to become a professional house sitter.

If you love to travel and experience new things as much as I do, you probably have ‘visit every country on the planet’ on your ‘Things I Want To Do Before I Die’ list. While a worthy goal it can seem an impossible one for the ordinary, non-superich person. That’s why I think house sitting would be a neat way to go about trying to achieve this pursuit. You could visit places like Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, anywhere really, without giving your budget a bashing.
