Naturally if you’re a Greek parent you will want your baby to speak Greek too. If you are living in Greece this is not an issue but what if you are living abroad?

Raising a bilingual baby may seem daunting at first but it is well within your child’s capabilities. You may be surprised but the best time to introduce a foreign language is when your baby is learning to speak their native language. Babies learn at such a fast rate teaching them to speak a second language is far less difficult than most would assume.

The most important part is that you expose your baby to as much language both native and foreign as possible. Some parents prefer the one parent-one language method where one parent speaks to the baby in Greek and the other only speaks in the foreign language.

Surrounding your baby with as much of the foreign language as possible will help your child absorb the information more readily. Consider joining a Greek community group or enlisting a Greek speaking babysitter.

Most importantly talk to your baby as much as you can, talk about what you are doing, describe colors, animals, objects around them home. Sing songs, it doesn’t matter what you sing or how well your baby will still enjoy it. Praise them when they try to copy your sounds.

Most of all make learning fun. There are a variety of Greek interactive learning toys and Greek books that can be used to aid your baby’s development. Try to find toys with colourful pictures, sounds or music to keep baby entertained while helping to improve their vocabulary.

There are many ways to make learning fun for your Greek baby. Don’t try too hard just let your baby learn at their own pace and enjoy the learning process.
