Learning your ABCs was the foundation of your education. Although you might have learned to speak a little bit by the time you learned to recognize letters, it was not until you knew all the letters that you could read. Reading is the beginning of knowledge and education. Those who cannot read are cutoff from so much of what the rest of us take for granted. Regardless of what your child will do in the future as a profession you can be sure that reading will be a big part of it. Teaching them the alphabet at a young age will help them to start reading even sooner. However, learning the alphabet is not high on the list of priorities for most young children. Kids would rather go outside and play or watch a movie with their favorite animated cartoon character. If you are going to help your child learn the alphabet you will have to make the process interesting and fun. The best way to do this is with fun activities and games designed to get your kids fascinated with the alphabet. Listed below are some great activities that will get your kids enthused about their ABCs.

1. Bean Bag Toss ABC. One of my personal favorites, this game involves throwing bean bags at letters. Write random letters on small pieces of paper. Scatter the paper around the room. Then call out random letters and have your child throw the bean bag at the letters. Before the child throws the bean bag they have to call out the letter they are trying to hit. Eventually allow your child to call out the letters and have you throw at them.

2. Singing ABCs. Although not a very original activity, the ABC song has taught millions of people the rudiments of the English language. Have a singing competition with your son or daughter to see who can remember the most letters.

3. ABC Draw. This activity allows your child to gain a little control over their parents, which is what so many kids want. Stand in front of a chalk board or large drawing pad. Have your son or daughter call out random letters. You try to draw the letters as quickly as possibly with your chalk or marker on the board. The quicker you are the more fun your child will have. At some point when they know their letters well enough give them a try drawing the letters.

4. ABC Memory Card Game. Spread two sets of ABC flash cards on the ground face down. Turn over the cards two to a turn. Match the cards and remove the matched sets as you go. Challenge your child to find the most number of matches. When they turn over a letter make them say the name of the letter or pronounce its phonetic sound.

5. Alphabet Bingo. Create bingo cards with random letters. Call out letters and have the child or children place something on them as the game progresses. The first person to get a row or column complete wins the game and gets a prize. Give your child the opportunity to call out the letters at some point, and make sure that they shout the names of the letters as they are called.

As you can see, there are a number of great activities you can use to make learning the alphabet fun. Brainstorm with your kids to come up with exciting new games. Sometimes children have the best ideas for games that will teach them what they need to know.
