Cookies rather than cake for Baby Shower?

I am planning a Baby Shower for my sister-in-law and am contemplating doing iced sugar cookies for dessert rather than cake or cupcakes. The main reason is because it will cost me a lot less, and my budget is dwindling for this project. The other is because the rest of the food will be finger foods. Serving cookies would keep the finger food theme also. Do you think it’s tacky to serve only cookies and no cake?

When I’ve been to buffet restaurants that have a great assortment of desserts to choose from (e.g. Hometown Buffet) I’ve noticed that cookies generally are more popular than cakes, pies, puddings, cobblers, and pretty much any dessert except maybe ice cream. And Hometown Buffet does serve good carrot cake, bread pudding, banana pudding, …etc so I think that says something positive about the appeal of cookies.

Everybody loves chocolate chip cookies except those of us who have to avoid caffeine; they are first so make some. Sugar cookies I’d say are second. Then oatmeal-raisin third. My personal favorite is peanut butter cookies but I’d rank them fourth for the general population.
